A Catullan Farewell

Far have I traveled o'er mountains, rivers, plains,
And come, father, to thy tearful funeral rite,
That to thee I may grant this last off'ring of my pains,
And thine unspeaking ashes vainly address I might.
Since, yes, Fortune from me thee she has wrenched,
Alas, poor father, that thou so early taken I cry.
But for now, this last gift, with filial tears drenched,
Accept for time everlasting, father, hail and goodbye.
