KATA ἸΩANNHN - According to John

1. In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was turned towards God, and what God was The Word was as well.

2. And The Word was in the beginning turned towards God.

3. All things were birthed from Him, and without Him birthed was not a single thing which hath been birthed.

4. Within Him was Life, and This Life was The Light of humankind.

5. And The Light in The Darkness shineth, and The Darkness overwhelmed It not.

6. Appeared a person sent from God, whose name was John.

7. He came to bear witness, to bear witness to The Light, so all may believe in Him.

8. That man was not The Light, but his purpose was to bear witness to The Light.

9. For it was that The True Light, The Light which lighteth each and every person, was coming into the world.

10. He was in the world, and the world was birthed through Him, and the world knew Him not.

11. He came amongst His own, and His own received Him not.

12. And whosoever received Him, He gave to them the power to be born children of God, the ones who believe in His name,

13. who not from blood, nor from the will of flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from God were born.

14. And The Word was born flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as the one-begotten of the Father, full of kindness and the gift of its truth.

15. John bore witness to Him and cried aloud saying, "Here is He of whom I spoke, 'the one who, though coming after me, hath been born before me, for He is first above me.'"

16. And from His fullness we all received a kind gift in addition to a kind gift:

17. For the Law was given through Moses, while the kindness and the gift of its truth were born through Jesus Christ.

1.18. None hath looked upon God -- ever; but the one-begotten Son who, ever being turned towards the breast of the Father, has divulged all at length.

1.19. And this is the witness borne by this John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from out of Jerusalem to ask him, "Who art thou?"

1.20. And he professed and did not deny and so professed: "I am not the Christ."

1.21. And they asked him, "Art thou Elias?" And saieth he: "I am not." "Art thou the prophet?" And he answered back: "No."

1.22. And so they said to him, "Who art thou? Tell us so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What dost thou have to say for thyself?"

1.23. And quoth he, "I am
'A voice of one crying out in the wilderness.
Make ye straight the path of the Lord'
Even so spake Esaia the prophet."

1.24. And these had been sent by the Pharisaioi.

1.25. And they asked him and they said to him, "So wherefore dost thou baptize if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the Prophet?"

1.26. And an answer made this John unto them, saying, "I baptize in water; into our midst hath stood someone whom ye see not,

1.27. Yea, the one who is coming after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."

1.28. These things in Bethania occurred, beyond the Jordan, where John was while he was baptizing.

1.29. On the next day sighteth he Jesus coming towards him and saieth he: "Behold the Lamb of God, The One taking away Sin from the World.

1.30. "Here is He of whom I spoke: The One who hath been born before me, for He is first above me.

1.31: And for my part, not did I know him, but so He might be revealed to Israel, yea for this reason came I baptizing in water."

1.32. And John bore witness to Him, saying: "I hath beheld The Spirit coming down as a dove from Heaven, and lighteth It upon Him.

1.33. "And for my part, not did I know Him, but The One Who sent me baptizing in the water spake unto me this: 'Upon Him mayest thou see The Spirit coming down and lighting upon Him -- this is The One who baptizeth in The Holy Spirit.'

1.34. "And for my part, I now know Him, and and I hath born witness that this is The Chosen of God."

1.35. On the next day stood there John and two of his students,

1.36. And upon sighting Jesus walking by, saieth he: "Behold the Lamb of God!"

1.37. And the two students heard him when he said this and they followed Jesus.

1.38. And upon turning to them and looking at them following Him, Jesus said to them: "What seek ye?" And spake they to Him: "Rabbi (this word signifies "Teacher"), where art Thou staying?"

1.39. Saieth He to them: "Come and ye shall see." And so, they went and saw where He stayed, and with Him they stayed that day. The hour was about the tenth.

1.40. And there was Andreas, the brother of Simon Peter, one of the two who heeded John and followed Jesus.

1.41. This man first found his own brother Simon and saieth he to him: "We hath found the Messiah (for this signifies "The Christ, The Anointed One").

1.42. He led him to Jesus. Upon seeing him, Jesus spake: "Thou art Simon the son of John; thou shalt be called Kephas (for this means "Petros").

1.43. On the next day wished He to go out to Galilaia. And found He Philippos and saieth Jesus to him: "Follow me."

1.44. And Philippos was from Bethsaida, from the same city as Andreas and Petros.

1.45. And Philippos found Nathanael and saieth he to him: "The one about whom Moses wrote in the Law, as well as the prophets -- we have found him: Jesus, son of Joseph of Nazaret."

1.46. And spake Nathanael to him: "Can anything good come from Nazaret?" Saieth Philippos to him: "Come and see."

1.47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards Him and saieth He about him: "Lo! this is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit."

1.48. Saieth Nathanael to Him: "Whence dost Thou know me?" Made Jesus an answer in reply and spake: "Before Philippos called thee, I saw thee under the fig tree."

1.49. Made Nathanael an answer to Him in reply: "Rabbi, Thou art The Son of God. Thou art The King of Israel."

1.50. Made Jesus an answer to him in reply and spake: "Because I said to thee that I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believe'st? Greater things than these thou shalt see."

1.51. And saieth He to him: "Amen, amen, I say to ye, ye shall see Heaven opened and the messengers of God rising and falling upon the Son of Humankind."

2.1. And on the third day a wedding took place at Kana of Galilaia, and the mother of Jesus was there.

2.2. And invited was Jesus and his students to the wedding.

2.3. And upon the wine running out, saieth the mother of Jesus to Him: "They have no wine."

2.4. And saieth Jesus to her: "Wherefore concern'st me, woman? Not yet hath my hour arrived."

2.5. And saieth His mother to the servants: "Whatever saieth He to ye, do."

2.6. And there were six stone water-jars standing there for the Jewish purification, each holding about two or three nine-gallon measures.

2.7. Saieth to them Jesus: "Fill the water-jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim.

2.8. And saieth He to them: "Now draw out some and take it to the headwaiter." And they took it to him.

2.9. As the headwaiter tasted it water, it became wine. And not did he know whence it had come, but the servants knew that they had drawn water. Calleth the headwaiter to the bridegroom,

2.10. And saieth he to him: "Everyone first serves the good wine and, when the guests hath drunk that, the lesser. Thou hast kept back the good wine until now."

2.11. This beginning of signs made Jesus at Kana of Galilaia and He revealed his Glory, and believed His students in Him.

2.12. After this He Himself went to Kapharnaoum and His mother and brothers and students, and there they stayed for not many days.

2.13. And close at hand was the Passover of the Jews, and upcountry Jesus travelled to Jerusalem.

2.14. And found He in the temple enclosure the sellers of cattle and sheep and pigeons, as well as the money-changers seated there,

2.15. And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple enclosure, the sheep and the cattle, and He poured out the money-changers' money and overturned their tables,

2.16. And to the sellers of pigeons spake He: "Take these hence. Make not the House of My Father a house of trade."

2.17. And so remembered His students what hath been written:
"Zeal for Thy House shall wholly devour me."

2.18. And so made the Jews an answer in reply and spake they to Him: "What sign dost Thou show us that Thou dost these things?"

2.19.  And made Jesus an answer in reply and spake He to them: "Raze this temple and within three days I shall raise it."

2.20. And so spake the Jews: "Within forty and six years was this temple built, and Thou within three days will raise it?"

2.21. But He was speaking about the temple, that is, His Body.

2.22. And so, when He was raised from the dead, remembered His students what He was saying, and they believed in Scripture and the Word which Jesus spake.

2.23. And so in Jerusalem, at the time of Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, seeing the signs which He was making.

2.24. But as for Jesus, He did not believe and entrust Himself to them on account of His knowing every person,

2.25. As He hath no need for anyone to bear witness about humanity, for He himself knows what there is within humanity.

3.1. There was a man of the Pharisaioi, Nikodemos by name, a leader of the Jews.

3.2. He came to Jesus during the night and spake to Him: "Rabbi, we know that from God Thou hast come as a teacher. For no one is able to do these signs which Thou dost if God be not with him."

3.3. And made Jesus an answer in reply and spake He to him: "Amen, amen, I say to thee: if one be not born anew from up on high, not are they able to see the kingdom of God."

3.4. And saieth Nikodemos to Him: "How is person able to be born if they are already old? It is not possible to enter a mother's womb a second time and be born anew, is it?"

3.5. And made Jesus an answer in reply: "Amen, amen, I say to thee: if one be not born of water and the Spirit, they are not able to enter into the kingdom of God.

3.6. "That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

3.7. "Be not amazed, thou, at what I said to thee: ye must be born anew from up on high.

3.8. "The wind blows where it blows, and it is the voice of the wind thou art hearing; but not know'st not whence the voice comes and whither It leads. In this way is everyone who hath been born of the Spirit.

3.9. And made Nikodemos an answer in reply and spake to Him: "How can this be?"

3.10. And made Jesus an answer in reply and spake to him: "Thou art a teacher of Israel and thou know'st not these things?

3.11. "Amen, amen, I say to thee that we talk about what we know and we bear witness to what we hath seen, but yet ye receive not our witness.

3.12. "If I speak of the affairs of the Earth to ye and ye believe it not, how shall ye believe if I speak to ye of affairs of Heaven?

3.13. "And no one hath gone up to Heaven if He not hath gone down from Heaven, The One who is the Son of Humanity.

3.14. "And as Moses raised up the serpent in the wilderness, in the same way must be raised up the Son of Humanity;

3.15. "For this reason, everyone who believeth in Him may have life for the ages."

3.16. For God so dearly loved the world that His one-begotten Son He gave; for this reason, everyone who believeth in Him shall not perish but have life for the ages.

3.17. For not did God send His Son into the world so that He may judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.

3.18. The one who believeth in Him not shall be judged; but the one who doth not believe, yea, shall they be judged because not hath they believed in The Name of the one-begotten Son of God.

3.19. And this is the doom that The Light hath come into the world, and yet people loved instead The Darkness rather than The Light, for wicked were their deeds.

3.20. For everyone who acteth evil hateth The Light and cometh not to The Light so that not a-lighted be their deeds.

3.21. But the one who doeth Truth cometh to The Light so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds that hath been wrought in God.

3.22. After these events, came Jesus and His students to the Judaian countryside, and there He spent some time among them and was baptizing.

3.23. And also was John there baptizing in Ainon hard by Saleim, as there was much water in those environs, and people came thither and were being baptized.

3.24. For not yet had John been taken into custody.

3.25. And there arose a debate amongst the students of John with a Jew concerning the rite of cleansing.

3.26. And they came to John and spake to him: "Rabbi, He who was with thee nearby the Jordan, He to whom thou bore witness, lo! He is here baptizing and all are going to him."

3.27. And John made an answer in reply and spake: "Not is a person able to receive any thing at all if not it hath been given to him from Heaven.

3.28. "Ye yourselves are witnesses that spake I: 'I am not the Christ,' but spake I that, 'I have been sent before Him' over yonder.

3.29. "He who hath the bride is the bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom who standeth and harkens unto him, in joy rejoiceth he in the voice of the bridegroom. And so, this is my joy fulfilled.

3.30. "He must needs grow, while I lessen."

3.31. He who from above cometh, is o'er and above all. He who is of the Earth is of the Earth, and of the Earth speaketh he. He who from Heaven cometh is o'er and above all.

3.32. To what He hath seen and heard He beareth witness, but His testimony no one receiveth. The one who receiveth his testimony hath signed their name to that fact that God is Truth.

3.34. For He whom God sent speaketh of the utterances of God, for not measure-by-measure doth He give The Spirit.

3.35. The Father dearly loveth the Son and all hath He given in His hand.

3.36. The one who believeth in The Son hath life for the ages, while the one who believeth not in The Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remaineth upon such a one.

4.1. And so knew Jesus that the Pharisaioi heard that Jesus maketh more students and baptizing them than John --

4.2. Even though, Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His students were --

4.3. And left they Judaia and went back to Galilaia.

4.4. And He must needs travel through Samareia.

4.5. And so cometh He to a city of Samareia called Sykhar, which is near the plot which Jacob gave to Joseph, his son.

4.6. And in this place was the spring of Jacob. And so, Jesus, wearied from toiling on the road, sat a spell beside the spring. The hour was about midday.

4.7. Cometh a woman out of Samareia to draw water. Spake Jesus to her: "Give me to drink."

4.8. For His students had gone to the city to buy meat at the market.

4.9. And saieth the Samaritan woman to Him: "How art Thou, a Jew, to ask a drink of me, a woman of Samareia? For not do Jews do anything in common with Samaritans."

4.10. And made Jesus an answer in reply and spake to her: "If thou knew'st the gift of God and who is He who speaketh to thee, 'Give me to drink,' upon asking Him for the same, He would give thee flowing water of life."

4.11. Saieth the woman to him: "Lord, neither hast Thou a bucket and the well is deep. And so, whence dost Thou have this flowing water?

4.12. "Surely not art Thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave to us this well and he himself drank of it, as well as his sons, and his beasts of burden?"

4.13. Made Jesus an answer in reply and spake to her: "All who drink from this water shall thirst again;

4.14. "Once one hath drunk of the water which I shall give to them, not only shall they not thirst for a lifetime, but the water which I shall give to them shall become in them a spring of water filling up to life for the ages."

4.15. Saieth the woman to Him: "Lord, give to me this water so that neither shall I thirst nor may I pass through here to draw water."

4.16. Saieth He to her: "Come now and call thy husband and come hither."

4.17. Made the woman an answer in reply and spake to Him: "I do not have a husband." Saieth Jesus to her: "Beautifully spake thou that 'I do not have a husband,'

4.18. "For five husbands thou had, and the one thou now hast is not thy husband. This is the truth thou hast spoken."

4.19. Saieth the woman to Him: "Lord, I have the sense that Thou art a prophet.

4.20. "Our fathers on this mountain made obeisance and worshipped. But ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must needs make obeisance and worship."

4.21. Saieth Jesus to her: "Believe me, woman, that cometh the hour when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem shall ye make obeisance and worship.

4.22. "While ye make obeisance and worship what ye do not know, we make obeisance and worship what we do know, that salvation is from the Jews.

4.23. "But cometh the hour -- and now it is, when the the true worshippers shall make obeisance to The Father in The Spirit and Its Truth; for also The Father seeketh such who would make obeisance and worship Him.

4.24. "God is spirit, and must needs those who would make obeisance and worship Him make obeisance and worship Him in the Spirit and Its Truth."

4.25. Saieth the woman to Him: "I know that the Messiah cometh, the one called Christ. Whenever He should come, He shall declare to us all things."

4.26. Saieth Jesus to her: "'I Am' is the one who speaketh to thee."

4.27. Upon this, returned His students and amazed they were that He was speaking with a woman, yet no one spake: "What seekest Thou?" or "Why speakest Thou with her?"

4.28. And so, the woman left her water jar and departed for the city and saieth her to the people:

4.29. "Come and see a man who spake to me all which I did. Is this man the Christ?"

4.30. They left from the city and went to Him.

4.31. In the meanwhile the students were asking Him, saying: "Rabbi, eat."

4.32. And spake He to them: "It is I who have food to eat which ye know not."

4.33. Thereupon the students were saying to one another: "None brought Him something to eat?"

4.34. Saieth Jesus to them: "My food is to do the will of The One Who Sent Me and I shall bring His work to an end.

4.35. "Do ye not say such like 'it is yet four moons and then the reaping cometh' -- lo! I say to ye, lift up your eyes and behold the fields and that they are white for the reaping. Already,

4.36. "The reaper receiveth pay and gathereth fruit for life for the ages, so that the sower may take the same joy as the reaper.

4.37. "For at this moment The Word rings true: 'One is the sower and another the reaper.'

4.38. "I have sent ye to reap for that which ye have not grown weary in toil -- others have grown weary, toiling for this, and ye have entered into their weariness of toil."

4.39. And out of that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him on account of the word of the woman who bore witness that, "Spake He to me everything which I did.'

4.40. And so when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them -- and He stayed with there for two days.

4.41. And many more believed on account of His Word,

4.42. And spake they to the woman: "No longer on account of what thou said do we believe -- for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this One is truly the Savior of the world.

4.43. And after two days He left thence for Galilaia.

4.44. For Jesus Himself bore witness that a prophet doth not have honor in their own land.

4.45. And so when He came to Galilaia, the Galilaians received Him, as they had seen all sorts of things He did in Jerusalem during the feast, for they themselves came to the feast.

4.46. And so He came again to Kana in Galilaia, where He made water into wine. And there was some royal official whose son was ill at Kapharnaoum.

4.47. Having heard that Jesus arrived from Judaia to Galilaia, this man departed for Him and asked Him to come coast-side and heal his son, for he was on the verge of death.

4.48. And so spake Jesus to him: "If not signs and wonders ye see, never may ye believe."

4.49. Spake the royal official to Him: "Lord, come coast-side before my little boy dies."

4.50. Saieth Jesus to him: "Make thy way -- thy son liveth." The man believed The Word which Jesus spake to him and he made his way.

4.51. Yea, while he was on his way coast-side, his slaves met up with him saying that his son liveth.

4.52. And so he inquired of them at what hour his son grew better. Spake they then to him that, "Yesterday, at the seventh hour the fever left him."

4.53. And so the father knew that it was at that very hour in which Jesus spake to him that, "Thy son liveth," and he himself believed as well as his whole household.

4.54. And again this was a second sign Jesus did coming out of Judaia to Galilaia.

5.1. After these events, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went inland to Jerusalem.

5.2. And there is at Jerusalem a pool for sheep called in Hebrew Bethesda, which had five porches.

5.3. Within this place lay a great number of the ill, the blind, the crooked, and the dry.

5.5. There was a man there who was thirty-eight years in his illness.

5.6. Setting his eyes upon this man lying there, Jesus knew that long had been his time and saieth He to him: "Dost thou wish to be healthy?"

5.7. And made the ill man an answer to Him: "Lord, I have not someone to throw me into the water when it is disturbed. When I come to the pool, someone else goes down before me."

5.8. Saieth Jesus to him: "Bestir thyself, take thy mat and walk."

5.9. And straightaway became the man healthy and he took his mat and walked. But it was the Sabbath on that day.

5.10. And so spake the Jews to the healed man, "It is the Sabbath, and not is it possible for thee to take thy mat."

5.11. And he made an answer to them: "The One who made me healthy -- that One spake to me, 'Take thy mat and walk.'"

5.12. And so they asked Him: "Who is the person who spake to thee, 'Take and walk?'"

5.13. And the healed man did not know who He was, for Jesus slipped out of the crowd gathering in that place.

5.14. And after these events, Jesus finds him in the temple enclosure and spake to him: "Lo! thou art become healthy! No longer sin thou, lest something worse happen to thee."

5.15. The man departed and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the One who made him healthy.

5.16. And on account of this the Jews went after Jesus because he did these things on the Sabbath.

5.17. And He made an answer to them: "My Father even now is working and I also am working."

5.18. And so on account of this were the Jews seeking to kill Him because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was saying that His own Father was God, making Himself equal to God.

5.19. And so Jesus made answer and spake to them: "Amen, amen, I say to ye that The Son is not able to do anything by Himself unless He sees The Father doing it. For that which The Father does, even such The Son likewise does.

5.20. "For The Father loveth The Son and shows to Him all which The Father Himself does and The Father will show The Son works greater than these so that ye may be amazed.

5.21. "For just as The Father bestireth and bestoweth life to the dead, just so shall The Son bestoweth life to those whom He wilt.

5.22. "Nor doth The Father doom anyone, but He hath given all doom to The Son

5.23. "so that all may honor The Son according to how they would honor The Father. The one dishonoring The Son honors not The Father who sent Him.

5.24. "Amen, amen I say to ye that the one who harkens unto My Word and believes in the One Who sent Me hath life for the ages, and they cometh not to doom but have passed from out of death into life for the ages.

5.25. "Amen, amen I say to ye that cometh the hour and now it is when the dead shall hear The Voice of The Son of God and they who hear It shall live.

5.26. "For just as The Father hath life within Himself, just so hath He given to The Son to have life within Himself.

5.27. "And The Father gave the power of rendering doom to The Son, as He is the Son of Humanity.

5.28. Be ye not shocked at this, for cometh the hour in which all within their tombs shall hear the voice of The Son

5.29. "and the ones who did good deeds shall make their way to a renewal of life, while the ones who acted in evil to a renewal of doom.

5.30. "I am unable for My part to do anything for Myself -- as I hear, I render doom; and this doom of Mine is righteous as I seek not Mine own Will, but The Will of The One Who sent Me.

5.31. "If I ever bear witness about Myself, this witnessing of Mine is not true:

5.32. "There is Another Who beareth witness about Me, and I know that truly is His witnessing which He beareth about Me.

5.33. "Ye sent to John, and he bore witness in The Truth.

5.34. "And for My part, I do not receive testimony from Humanity, but I say these things so they ye may be saved.

5.35. "He was a lamp kindling and shining, and ye wished to delight  in an hour in his light --

5.36. "But I have a greater witnessing than John, for the works which The Father hath given Me so that I shall bring them to an end, these selfsame works which I am doing beareth witness about Me because The Father sent Me.

5.37. "And the Father Who sent Me hath Himself born witness about Me. Neither unto His voice ever have ye harkened nor unto His likeness have ye beheld.

5.38. "And The Word of The Father ye hath not residing within ye because in the One whom The Father sent ye do not believe.

5.39. "Search ye The Writings, because ye imagine within them to have life for the ages -- and these same Writings bear witness to Me.

5.40. "But ye do not wish to come to Me so that ye may have life.

5.41. "I do not receive glory from Humanity,

5.42. "but I have known ye because the love of God ye have not within yourselves.

5.43. "I have come in The Name of My Father and ye do not receive Me. But if someone else were to come in his own name, him ye will receive.

5.44. "How are ye able to believe if ye receive glory from each other and The Glory of The Only God ye seek not?

5.45. "Not do ye imagine that I shall accuse ye before The Father -- the one who accuses ye is Moses, in whom ye have hope.

5.46. "For if ye were to believe in Moses, ye would believe in Me, for he wrote about Me.

5.47. "And if ye believe not in his Writings, how shall ye believe in My words?"
