• 1 

1 Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum, et in via peccatorum non stetit, et in cathedra pestilentiae non sedit;

        1. Blessed is the man who goeth not away in counsel of the wicked, and he hath not stood in the pathway of the sinful, and he hath not sat in the throne of pestilence.     

2 sed in lege Domini voluntas ejus, et in lege ejus meditabitur die ac nocte.

        2. But in the Law of the Lord is found his will, and on this His Law shall he ruminate by day and by night.

3 Et erit tamquam lignum quod plantatum est secus decursus aquarum, quod fructum suum dabit in tempore suo: et folium ejus non defluet; et omnia quaecumque faciet prosperabuntur.

        3. And it shall be as if a bark hath been planted near a stream of waters, and fruit shall it give of in its own time: and its leaves shall not fall down; and all whatsoever he shall do, shall prosper.

4 Non sic impii, non sic; sed tamquam pulvis quem projicit ventus a facie terrae.

        4. Not so with the wicked, not so; but as dust they shall be, which the wind hath cast forth upon the face of the earth.

5 Ideo non resurgent impii in judicio, neque peccatores in concilio justorum:

        5. For this reason shall not the wicked rise again in doom, nor shall sinners in the council of the righteous.

6 quoniam novit Dominus viam justorum, et iter impiorum peribit.

        6. For the Lord hath known the way of the righteous, and destroyed shall be the path of the wicked.

1 Quare fremuerunt gentes, et populi meditati sunt inania?

        Why have the nations groaned, and why have the peoples ruminated on empty vanities?

2 Astiterunt reges terrae, et principes convenerunt in unum adversus Dominum, et adversus christum ejus.

        2. The kings of the earth have stood ready, and the princes have gathered as one against God, and against his annointed chosen.

3 Dirumpamus vincula eorum, et projiciamus a nobis jugum ipsorum.

        3. They say, "Let us break apart their bonds, and let us cast from us their yoke."

4 Qui habitat in caelis irridebit eos, et Dominus subsannabit eos.

        4. The One who resideth in the heavens shall laugh at them, and the Lord shall mock them. 

5 Tunc loquetur ad eos in ira sua, et in furore suo conturbabit eos.

        5. Then shall He speak against them in His wrath, and in His rage shall He confound them. 

6 Ego autem constitutus sum rex ab eo super Sion, montem sanctum ejus, praedicans praeceptum ejus.

        6. "It is I who hath been established by Him as a king o'er Sion, His holy mountain," I shall say, proclaiming His command.

7 Dominus dixit ad me: Filius meus es tu; ego hodie genui te.

        7. The Lord hath said to me: "My son thou art; today I have begotten thee.

8 Postula a me, et dabo tibi gentes haereditatem tuam, et possessionem tuam terminos terrae.

        8. "Demand of me and I shall grant thee nations as thine inheritance, and the ends of the earth thy belonging.

9 Reges eos in virga ferrea, et tamquam vas figuli confringes eos.

        9. "Thou shalt rule them with an iron rod, and as if they were a potter's vases shalt thou break them." 

10 Et nunc, reges, intelligite; erudimini, qui judicatis terram.

        10. And now, O kings, harken and understand; learn, ye who judge the earth. 

11 Servite Domino in timore, et exsultate ei cum tremore.

        11. Serve, ye, the Lord in fear, and raise Him up with dread.

12 Apprehendite disciplinam, nequando irascatur Dominus, et pereatis de via justa.

        12. Learn ye, your training, lest the Lord be wroth, and ye fall from the righteous way into death.

13 Cum exarserit in brevi ira ejus, beati omnes qui confidunt in eo.

        13. When kindled is His wrath in the slightest, then blessed are all who trust in Him.

1 Psalmus David, cum fugeret a facie Absalom filii sui.

        1. A Song of David when he fled from the face of Absalom, his own son.

2 Domine, quid multiplicati sunt qui tribulant me? Multi insurgunt adversum me;

        2. Lord, why increased are those who vex me? Many rise against me;

3 multi dicunt animae meae: Non est salus ipsi in Deo ejus.

        3. Many speak to my soul: there is no salvation in his very God.

4 Tu autem Domine, susceptor meus es, gloria mea, et exaltans caput meum.

        4. But, O Lord, Thou art my up-lifter, my glory, and He who holdeth high my head.

5 Voce mea ad Dominum clamavi; et exaudivit me de monte sancto suo.

        5. With my voice I cry to the Lord and He harkens unto me from His sacred mount.

6 Ego dormivi, et soporatus sum; et exsurrexi, quia Dominus suscepit me.

        6. I have slept and rested; and I have risen because the Lord hath lifted me up.

7 Non timebo millia populi circumdantis me. Exsurge, Domine; salvum me fac, Deus meus.

        7. I shall not fear the thousands surrounding me. Rise, Lord, and save me, my God.

8 Quoniam tu percussisti omnes adversantes mihi sine causa; dentes peccatorum contrivisti.

        8. Since Thou hast struck all those opposed to me without cause; the teeth of the sinners Thou hast brok'n.

9 Domini est salus; et super populum tuum benedictio tua.

        9. Salvation belongeth to the Lord; and o'er Thy people is Thy blessing.

        1. To victory, in song. A Psalm of David.

2 Cum invocarem exaudivit me Deus justitiae meae, in tribulatione dilatasti mihi. Miserere mei, et exaudi orationem meam.

        2. When I call upon Him, God of my justice hath hearkened unto me, in my trials Thou hast set me at large. Have mercy on me, and harken unto my prayer.

3 Filii hominum, usquequo gravi corde? ut quid diligitis vanitatem, et quaeritis mendacium?

        3. Sons of humankind, how long will ye be with heavy heart? Why cherish vanity and seek lies?

4 Et scitote quoniam mirificavit Dominus sanctum suum; Dominus exaudiet me cum clamavero ad eum.

        4. And know, ye, how the Lord hath exalted His own blessed; the Lord shall harken unto me when I shall have called unto Him.

5 Irascimini, et nolite peccare; quae dicitis in cordibus vestris, in cubilibus vestris compungimini.

        5. Grow wroth, ye, and sin not; feel remorse for what ye say in your hearts, what ye do in your beds.

6 Sacrificate sacrificium justitiae, et sperate in Domino. Multi dicunt: Quis ostendit nobis bona?

        7. Offer your sacrifice to Justice, and hope, ye, in the Lord. Many say, "Who hath showed us these goods?"

7 Signatum est super nos lumen vultus tui, Domine: dedisti laetitiam in corde meo.

        7. The light of Thy Face hath shone above us, O Lord: Thou hast given happiness in my heart.

8 A fructu frumenti, vini, et olei sui, multiplicati sunt.

        8. By the fruit of grain, of wine, of oil is my happiness multiplied.

9 In pace in idipsum dormiam, et requiescam;

        9. In peace shall I lie down in sleep and rest;

10 quoniam tu, Domine, singulariter in spe constituisti me.

        10. Since Thou alone, O Lord, hath set me up in hope.

        2. To victory, for that which the inheritors receive. A Psalm of David.

2 Verba mea auribus percipe, Domine; intellige clamorem meum.

        2. Harken unto my words with Thine ears, O Lord: Understand my cry.

3 Intende voci orationis meae, rex meus et Deus meus.

        3. Give attention to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God.

4 Quoniam ad te orabo, Domine: mane exaudies vocem meam.

        4. For I shall pray to Thee, O Lord: in the morning Thou shalt hear my voice.

5 Mane astabo tibi, et videbo quoniam non Deus volens iniquitatem tu es.

        5. In the morning shall I stand nigh to Thee, and I shall see, for Thou art not God who wisheth ill.  

6 Neque habitabit juxta te malignus, neque permanebunt injusti ante oculos tuos.

        6. Nor shall an evil man live near Thee, nor shall the unrighteous remain before Thine eyes.

7 Odisti omnes qui operantur iniquitatem; perdes omnes qui loquuntur mendacium. Virum sanguinum et dolosum abominabitur Dominus.

        7. Thou hatest all who work ill; Thou shalt destroy all who speak a lie. The Lord shall abhor a man of blood and suffering.

8 Ego autem in multitudine misericordiae tuae introibo in domum tuam; adorabo ad templum sanctum tuum in timore tuo.

        8. But I who am among the crowd of Thy mercy shall enter into Thy home; I shall worship at Thy holy temple in Thy fear.

9 Domine, deduc me in justitia tua: propter inimicos meos dirige in conspectu tuo viam meam.

        9. O Lord, lead me in Thy Justice: because of mine enemies, direct my way in Thy sight .

10 Quoniam non est in ore eorum veritas; cor eorum vanum est.

        10. Since the Truth is not in their mouth; their heart is empty.

11 Sepulchrum patens est guttur eorum; linguis suis dolose agebant: judica illos, Deus. Decidant a cogitationibus suis; secundum multitudinem impietatum eorum expelle eos, quoniam irritaverunt te, Domine.

        11. Like unto their throat is an open tomb; sorrowfully do they work their tongues: judge them, O God. Let them fall from their thoughts; drive them out, O Lord, according to the great number of their wickedness, since they have stirred Thee to wrath.

12 Et laetentur omnes qui sperant in te; in aeternum exsultabunt, et habitabis in eis. Et gloriabuntur in te omnes qui diligunt nomen tuum,

        12. And let all be happy who hope in Thee; for the ages they shall exalt, and Thou shalt live in them. And they shall glory in Thee, all who cherish Thy Name.

13 quoniam tu benedices justo. Domine, ut scuto bonae voluntatis tuae coronasti nos.

        13. For Thou shalt bless the just. O Lord, Thou hast crowned us as with a shield of Thy good Will.

Psalmus David. Judica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo et doloso erue me.

        1. A Psalm of David. Judge me, O God, and plead my case against an accursed people: from an unkind and crafty person deliver me.

2 Quia tu es, Deus, fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti? et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

        2. For Thou, O God, art my strength: wherefore then is it me Thou hast cast off? Wherefore trod I a tearful path whilst mine enemy vexeth me?

3 Emitte lucem tuam et veritatem tuam: ipsa me deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum, et in tabernacula tua.

        3. Send out Thy light and Thy truth: these have guided me, and hath led me to Thy holy mountain and into Thy tent.

4 Et introibo ad altare Dei, ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam. Confitebor tibi in cithara, Deus, Deus meus.

        4. And I shall approach unto the altar of God, to God who maketh glad my youth. I shall offer praise unto Thee on my cithara, O God, my God.

5 Quare tristis es, anima mea? et quare conturbas me? Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor illi, salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus.

        5. Wherefore art thou sad, my soul? Wherefore dost Thou trouble me? Hope, thou, in God, since I shall offer praise to Him, the salvation of my countenance, my God.

2 cum venit ad eum Nathan propheta, quando intravit ad Bethsabee.

        2. when came to David Nathan the Prophet when the former slept with Bathsheba:

3 Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam; et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam.

        3. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. According to great number of Thy merciful acts, erase my wickedness.

4 Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea, et a peccato meo munda me.

        4. Moreso, wash me of my wickedness and of my sin cleanse me.

5 Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego cognosco, et peccatum meum contra me est semper.

        5. For I recognize mine own wickedness, and my sin is ever against me.

6 Tibi soli peccavi, et malum coram te feci; ut justificeris in sermonibus tuis, et vincas cum judicaris.

        6. To Thee alone have I sinned, and before Thee have I done evil; so that Thou art justified in Thy words and vindicated when Thou dost judge me.

7 Ecce enim in iniquitatibus conceptus sum, et in peccatis concepit me mater mea.

        7. For lo! In wickedness was I conceived, and in sin did my mother give me birth.

8 Ecce enim veritatem dilexisti; incerta et occulta sapientiae tuae manifestasti mihi.

        8. For lo! Thou hast cherished truth; unsure and secret affairs of Thy wisdom hast Thou made clear to me.

9 Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor; lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.

        9. Thou shalt wash me with hyssop, and cleansed shall I be; Thou shalt wash me, and moreso than snow shall I be whitened.

10 Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam, et exsultabunt ossa humiliata.

        10. To mine hearing shalt Thou give joy and gladness, and exalt shall bones which have been brought low.

11 Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis, et omnes iniquitates meas dele.

        11. Turn aside, Thou, Thy face from my sins and erase, Thou, all my wickedness.

12 Cor mundum crea in me, Deus, et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis.

        12. Make, Thou, a clean heart within me, O God, and make, Thou, anew an upright spirit within my entrails.

13 Ne projicias me a facie tua, et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me.

        13. Mayest Thou not cast me forth from Thy face, and mayest Thou not take away Thy spirit from me.

14 Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui, et spiritu principali confirma me.

        14. Return, Thou, to me the happiness of Thy salvation and with Thy foremost spirit strengthen, Thou, me.

15 Docebo iniquos vias tuas, et impii ad te convertentur.

        15. I shall teach the wicked Thy ways, and the unholy shall to Thee be turned.

16 Libera me de sanguinibus, Deus, Deus salutis meae, et exsultabit lingua mea justitiam tuam.

        16. Free me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation, and my tongue shall exalt Thy justice.

17 Domine, labia mea aperies, et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam.

        17. O Lord, my lips Thou shalt open, and my mouth shall proclaim Thy praise.

18 Quoniam si voluisses sacrificium, dedissem utique; holocaustis non delectaberis.

        18. For if Thou hadst wished for a sacrifice, I would have rightly made one; but in burnt off'rings Thou shall not find delight.

19 Sacrificium Deo spiritus contribulatus; cor contritum et humiliatum, Deus, non despicies.

        19. A sacrifice for God is a troubled spirit; a contrite and upon humbled heart, O God, Thou shalt not look down.

20 Benigne fac, Domine, in bona voluntate tua Sion, ut aedificentur muri Jerusalem.

        20. Kindly act, O Lord, in Thy good will toward Sion, so that may be built the walls of Jerusalem.

21 Tunc acceptabis sacrificium justitiae, oblationes et holocausta; tunc imponent super altare tuum vitulos.

        21. Then shalt Thou receive the holy right of justice, the off'rings, and burnt sacrifices; then shall they place upon Thine altar young bullocks.

2 Exaudi, Deus, orationem meam cum deprecor; a timore inimici eripe animam meam.

        2. Harken, O God, to my prayer when I beseech Thee; from fear of my foe take away my soul.

3 Protexisti me a conventu malignantium, a multitudine operantium iniquitatem.

        3. Thou hast guarded me from the gathering of evil-doers, from the great number of those working ill. 

4 Quia exacuerunt ut gladium linguas suas; intenderunt arcum rem amaram,

        4. Because they have sharpened their tongues as a sword; they have bent bows to loose bitterness,

5 ut sagittent in occultis immaculatum.

        5. To secretly strike with their arrows a blameless man.

6 Subito sagittabunt eum, et non timebunt; firmaverunt sibi sermonem nequam. Narraverunt ut absconderent laqueos; dixerunt: Quis videbit eos?

        6. Suddenly they shall shoot him, and not shall they fear; they have strengthened their sordid speech with each other. They have told each other to hide snares; they have said, Who shall see them?

7 Scrutati sunt iniquitates; defecerunt scrutantes scrutinio. Accedet homo ad cor altum,

        7. They have sought out wickedness; by seeking such out, they have failed in their search. Man shall come to a deep heart, 

8 et exaltabitur Deus. Sagittae parvulorum factae sunt plagae eorum,

        8. And God shall be lifted up. The arrows of their little ones have become as a plague,

9 et infirmatae sunt contra eos linguae eorum. Conturbati sunt omnes qui videbant eos,

        9. And their tongues have grown weak against them. All who saw them were troubled,

10 et timuit omnis homo. Et annuntiaverunt opera Dei, et facta ejus intellexerunt.

        10. And everyone feared them. And they announced the Works of God, and they understood His Deeds.

11 Laetabitur justus in Domino, et sperabit in eo, et laudabuntur omnes recti corde.

        11. A righteous person shall be happy in the Lord and shall hope in Him, and everyone upright in heart shall be praised.

2 Deus misereatur nostri, et benedicat nobis; illuminet vultum suum super nos, et misereatur nostri:

        2. May God have mercy on us, and may He bless us;
may He shine His face o'er us, and may He have mercy on us:

3 ut cognoscamus in terra viam tuam, in omnibus gentibus salutare tuum.

        3. So that we may know Thy Way on Earth, Thy Salvation among all nations of the world.

4 Confiteantur tibi populi, Deus: confiteantur tibi populi omnes.

        4. May the people give thanks to Thee, God: may to Thee all the people give thanks.

5 Laetentur et exsultent gentes, quoniam judicas populos in aequitate, et gentes in terra dirigis.

        5. May the Gentiles be glad and rejoice since Thou judge all peoples in fairness, and Thou guidest them upon the Earth.

6 Confiteantur tibi populi, Deus: confiteantur tibi populi omnes.

        6. May the people give thanks to Thee, God: may to Thee all the people give thanks.

7 Terra dedit fructum suum: benedicat nos Deus, Deus noster!

        7. The Earth hath given her fruit: may God, our God bless us!

8 Benedicat nos Deus, et metuant eum omnes fines terrae.

        8. May God bless us, and may all the ends of the Earth fear Him.

        1. To victory, in praise. A psalm of Asaph, a little song to the Assyrians.

2 Notus in Judæa Deus; in Israël magnum nomen ejus. 

        2. Known in Judaea is God; in Israel great is His Name. 

3 Et factus est in pace locus ejus, et habitatio ejus in Sion. 

        And made hath been His place in peace, and His dwelling is in Sion.

4 Ibi confregit potentias arcuum, scutum, gladium, et bellum. 

        4. There He breaketh the powers of the bow, the shield, the sword, and war.

5 Illuminans tu mirabiliter a montibus æternis; 

        5. Lighting Thou in wond'rous fashion from the everlasting mountains;

6 turbati sunt omnes insipientes corde. Dormierunt somnum suum, et nihil invenerunt omnes viri divitiarum in manibus suis. 

        6. In confusion were all the fools at heart. Slumber'd they their sleep, and no riches did all the men find within their hands.

7 Ab increpatione tua, Deus Jacob, dormitaverunt qui ascenderunt equos. 

        7. From Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, have slept those who mounted their horses.

8 Tu terribilis es; et quis resistet tibi? ex tunc ira tua. 

        8. Thou art terrible; who shall resist Thee? from the time of Thy wrath.

9 De cælo auditum fecisti judicium : terra tremuit et quievit 

        9. From heaven hast Thou made Thy doom heard: the Earth hath trembl'd and still'd

10 cum exsurgeret in judicium Deus, ut salvos faceret omnes mansuetos terræ. 

        10. When God did rise in doom, such that He made saved all the mild of the Earth.

11 Quoniam cogitatio hominis confitebitur tibi, et reliquiæ cogitationis diem festum agent tibi. 

        11. Since a person's thought shall give praise unto Thee, and the remains of that thought shall make a feast-day for Thee.

12 Vovete et reddite Domino Deo vestro, omnes qui in circuitu ejus affertis munera: terribili, 

        12. Make a vow and pay it to The Lord your God, all ye who are around offering gifts: make it to Him who is terrible,

13 et ei qui aufert spiritum principum: terribili apud reges terræ.

        13. To Him who taketh away the spirit of princes: to Him who is terrible among all the kings of the Earth.

        1. A Psalm of a little song, on the day of the sabbath.

2 Bonum est confiteri Domino, et psallere nomini tuo, Altissime:

        2. It is good to offer praise to the Lord, and to sing praises to Thy Name, O Most High:

3 ad annuntiandum mane misericordiam tuam, et veritatem tuam per noctem,

        3. For praising Thy Mercy in the morn, and Thy Truth throughout the night,

4 in decachordo, psalterio; cum cantico, in cithara.

        4. On a ten-chord, on my psaltery; with a song, on my guitar.

5 Quia delectasti me, Domine, in factura tua; et in operibus manuum tuarum exsultabo.

        5. Because Thou hast delighted me, O Lord, in what Thou hast yet to do; and in the Works of Thy Hands I shall exalt. 

6 Quam magnificata sunt opera tua, Domine! nimis profundae factae sunt cogitationes tuae.

        6. How wonderous are Thy Works, O Lord! So very deep have become Thy Thoughts.

7 Vir insipiens non cognoscet, et stultus non intelliget haec.

        7. The foolish man shall not know Thee, and the stupid shall not understand these things. 

8 Cum exorti fuerint peccatores sicut foenum, et apparuerint omnes qui operantur iniquitatem, ut intereant in saeculum saeculi:

        8. When shall have arisen the sinners like hay, and shall have appeared all who work ill, so that they may pass away for age unto ages:

9 tu autem Altissimus in aeternum, Domine.

        9. But Thou art the Most High for all ages unending, O Lord.

10 Quoniam ecce inimici tui, Domine, quoniam ecce inimici tui peribunt; et dispergentur omnes qui operantur iniquitatem.

        10. Lo! For there are Thine enemies, O Lord! Lo! For Thy enemies shall die! and let scatter them all who work ill. 

11 Et exaltabitur sicut unicornis cornu meum, et senectus mea in misericordia uberi.

        11. And shall my horn be lifted as a unicorn's, and my old age in fruitful mercy.

12 Et despexit oculus meus inimicos meos, et in insurgentibus in me malignantibus audiet auris mea.

        12. And my eye hath looked down upon mine enemies, and mine ear shall hear of those ill who rise against me

13 Justus ut palma florebit; sicut cedrus Libani multiplicabitur.

        13. A righteous man shall bloom as a palm tree; just as a cedar of Lebanon shall he become many. 

14 Plantati in domo Domini, in atriis domus Dei nostri florebunt.

        14. Those planted in the House of the Lord, in the court of our God shall they bloom. 

15 Adhuc multiplicabuntur in senecta uberi, et bene patientes erunt:

        15. Now shall they grow many in fruitful old age, and well shall they suffer:

16 ut annuntient quoniam rectus Dominus Deus noster, et non est iniquitas in eo. 

        16. So that they declare that upright is the Lord our God, and there is not any ill in Him.

Laus cantici ipsi David. Venite, exsultemus Domino; jubilemus Deo salutari nostro;

        1. A Little Song Of Praise For David Himself. Come ye, let us rejoice to the Lord; let us lift up our voices in song to God our Savior;

2 praeoccupemus faciem ejus in confessione, et in psalmis jubilemus ei:

        2. Let us take note of His face in thanks, and in let us lift up our voices in song to Him;

3 quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et rex magnus super omnes deos.

        3. For God is the great Lord, and He is the great King over all the gods.

4 Quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terrae, et altitudines montium ipsius sunt;

        4. As within His hand are all the ends of the Earth, and the heights of the mountains are His own;

5 quoniam ipsius est mare, et ipse fecit illud, et siccam manus ejus formaverunt.

        5. For His is the sea, for He Himself made it, and His hands formed the dry land.

6 Venite, adoremus, et procidamus, et ploremus ante Dominum qui fecit nos:

        6. Come, let us adore Him; and let us fall before Him; and let us beg before the Lord who hath made us.

7 quia ipse est Dominus Deus noster, et nos populus pascuae ejus, et oves manus ejus.

        7. For He Himself is the Lord, He who is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, even the sheep of His hand.

8 Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis, nolite obdurare corda vestra

        8. If today ye will have heard His voice, do not harden your hearts

9 sicut in irritatione, secundum diem tentationis in deserto, ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri: probaverunt me, et viderunt opera mea.

        9. As if you are stirr'd in wrath, on that day of temptation in the desert, when it was me your fathers tempted: they tested me, and they saw my works. 

10 Quadraginta annis offensus fui generationi illi, et dixi: Semper hi errant corde.

        10. For forty years was I offended by that generation, and spake I: always these err in their heart.

11 Et isti non cognoverunt vias meas: ut juravi in ira mea: Si introibunt in requiem meam.

        11. And these fools did not learn my ways: thus did I judge them in my wrath: in no way shall they enter unto my rest.
