SANCTI ANSELMI ORATIONES - The Prayers of St. Anselm

Oratio IX

Ad Deum

To God
Omnipotens Deus, et misericors Pater, et bone Domine, miserere mihi peccatori.
O Almighty God, O merciful Father, O good Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Da mihi veniam peccatorum meorum,
Grant unto me a pardon for my sins;

cavere et vincere omnes insidias, et tentationes et delectationes noxias,
that I guard against and o’ercome all ensnarements, temptations and harmful delights;
perfecte mente et actu vitare, quae prohibes,
that I completely ward off in mind and deed what Thou forbid’st,
facere et servare quae jubes,
while I do and keep what Thou bid’st;
credere, sperare, amare,
that I trust, that I hope, that I love;
velle quod et quantum et tu scis et vis,
that I long for whatever Thou dost, as much as Thou know’st and will’st it.
compunctionem humilitatis et pietatis, discretam abstinentiam et carnis mortificationem,
Grant unto me the compunction of humility and piety, markéd abstinence, and the mortification of the flesh,
ad te amandum, orandum, laudandum, meditandum,
so that Thee I love, to Thee I pray, Thee I praise, on Thee I meditate;
ad omnem secundum te actum et cogitatum,
that in accordance with Thee is every deed and thought;
puram, sobriam, devotam mentem,
that I possess a pure, sober, devoted mind;
veracem et efficacem mandatorum tuorum notitiam, dilectionem, facilitatem et effectum,
that I possess a truthful and unfailing knowledge of Thy commands, and have a love of them, and an ease in following and carrying them out;
semper, Domine ad meliora cum humilitate proficere et nunquam deficere.
and that I ever, O Lord, for the better with humility set out, and that I never falter.
Ne commitas me, Domine, voluntati meae, nec humanae ignorantiae, aut infirmitati, neque meis meritis, nec ulli alii quam tuae piae dispositioni.
Entrust me not, O Lord, to mine own desires, nor to human ignorance or infirmity, nor to mine own deserts, nor to anything other than Thy pious demeanor.
Sed tu ipse clementer dispone me et omnes cogitatus et actus meos in beneplacito tuo, ut fiat a me, et in me et de me, tua semper sola voluntas.
But Thyself do mercifully guide me, as well as all my thoughts and mine actions in Thy pleasure, that by me, in me, and of me shall Thy will alone ever be.
Libera me ab omni malo, et perduc me in vitam aeternam.
Deliver me from all evil and lead me into life eternal.
Amen.
